Happy National Year of Reading!

2–3 minutes

It’s 2026 and we’re going all in

Our Labour government are doing exactly one thing right – let us not mention the rest of it. In 2026 they are promoting reading for pleasure! The Department for Education, alongside the Literacy Trust, have pledged to create libraries in primary schools across the UK and focus on fostering a lifelong love of reading in children.

Reading for pleasure is essential for little ones today – not only is it a peaceful escape from screens but it’s proven to be beneficial for their future. One study of 10,000 children found reading for pleasure early in life led to better performances in cogitative tests and better mental health when the children reached adolescence.

The most magical moments in Clemo Books happen when all three generations in a family find a book they want to take home. There aren’t many places where a grandpa, young mum and toddler can all find something they are truly excited about – that is the power of books.

We hope adults will benefit from the National Year of Reading too. It’s never too late to pick up a new hobby and reading is one of the most accessible one’s around. No internet connection needed, no adverts interrupting your experience, and one book can provide hours of entertainment which you can then pass on again and again.

If you’re nervous about starting to read (perhaps like lots of people you haven’t picked up a book since school) pop into your local bookshop and simply ask for a recommendation.

Clemo Books top tips to get into reading:

  • Don’t start with a War and Peace, opt for a slim paperback, collection of short stories or young adult book to kickstart your love of books.
  • Carve out time in your day to read – wake up 10 minutes earlier, go to bed before your usual bedtime, just a few pages a day will make a difference.
  • Join a buddy read, there are lots of these groups online. A book is chosen, you read a chapter a week and then come together to discuss it.
  • Choose a book about a subject you’re already passionate about. There are books on every subject you can think of!

Reading is the most accessible form of artistic culture available to us. Walk past a bus stop and you’ll find a stack of paperbacks, sign up to your local library, browse second-hand titles in the charity shop or just ask someone you know if you can borrow a book.

Celebrate the National Year of Reading 2026 by picking up a book, gifting one to a friend, or pop by Clemo Books!
