Lego beach-combing author Tracey Williams book signing

Clemo Books will be hosting a book signing with Tracey Williams, author of Adrift: The Curious Tale of the Lego Lost at Sea, at Newquay Farmers Market on Sunday 27 November, 10am – 12pm.

People will have the chance to talk to the Newquay based author about her work, their own beachcombing experiences, and purchase the book signed by Tracey herself.

Adrift: The Curious Tale of the Lego Lost at Sea is an exploration into the Lego pieces which fell overboard in 1997 when 62 containers fell off the Tokio Express cargo ship when it was hit by a rogue wave 20 miles off the Cornish coast.

With the help of beachcombers, oceanographers, scientists, maritime archaeologists, divers and the fishing community, Tracey has chronicled and documented countless Lego pieces, many of which are aptly inspired by the sea.

Tracey said: “I’ve always been fascinated by chance finds and the stories and folklore behind them. Back in the late 1990s, searching for Lego with my children on the beaches around our family home started as a bit of fun. Ultimately, though, it opened my eyes to all the rest of the plastic in the sand and sea.”

As well as capturing the magic of beachcombing, Adrift casts a light on some of the other weird and not so wonderful plastic finds discovered on the shores of Cornwall and beyond.

Published in February 2022 this is one of the first chances people in Newquay can purchase the book and talk to Tracey in the author’s hometown.

Jaimie Poyner, bookseller at Clemo Books said: “People who live or grew up in Newquay will have spent lots of time by the seashore, I can remember finding a Lego piece on Watergate Bay and my parents telling me this tale. I’m so excited to learn more from Tracey during the book signing at the always wonderful Newquay Farmers Market.”
